21st Century Universities

On the 28th of September 2017 Slavka Tomascikova, the Head of the Department of British and American Studies FF UPJS, a visiting researcher at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University in Ukraine, was invited to participate in the meeting organized by the British Council Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in Kyiv, as a member of the group representing Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University together with the Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, prof. Dr. Petro Fochuk, the Head of the English Department, prof. Nadiya Yesypenko and the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages for Natural Sciences, prof. Oľga Manyutina. After the presentation of the publication written by Rod Bolitho and Richard West in which the results of the British Council's project „English for Universities“ are summarised, the panel discussion focused on the current state of the art of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) courses at universities. Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University was quoted as one of the examples of best practice in the ESP/EMI within the project in which 16 Ukrainian universities have taken part. The importance to strengthen the position of these courses in the study programmes at all levels and in all fields was linked with the aspects of internationalisation of research, staff and student mobility, and growing internationalisation of job market in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in which the teaching and learning of English plays a crucial role.
